21 Days Broome - Broome

by Kathy
(Adelaide)

We would really appreciate your thoughts on the itinerary my partner and I are planning for late May this year. We are hiring a 4WD so are aware of the tracks that will void our insurance.

As a result we have reluctantly skipped the Mitchell Plateau but I am still wondering if we should leave off the Dampier Peninsular on the end and add in a trip to Drysdale Station and spend the money on the scenic flight over the plateau and Prince Regent River etc... any thoughts?

We will mostly be camping and hoping not to spend the whole time on the road driving. I am aware that Day 10 is a lot of driving, how long do you think that would take? Any other options here?

Day 1 Arrive Broome (pick up car & supplies)
Day 2 Fitzroy Crossing
Day 3 (Geikie Gorge) Spring Creek
Day 4 (Bungles: Mini Palms & Echidna Chasm) Walardi
Day 5 overnight hike in Piccaninny Creek
Day 6 Walardi
Day 7 Kununurra (re stock)
Day 8 & 9 El Questro Station
Day 10 Manning Gorge
Day 11 & 12 Charnley River Station
Day 13 & 14 Mornington Wilderness Camp (St John Gorge)
Day 15 Bell Gorge
Day 16 Mt Hart Wilderness Lodge
Day 17 Windjana Gorge (Tunnel Creek)
Day 18 Derby (flight over Buccaneer Achapelago?? $?)
Day 19 & 20 Dampier Peninsular (Middle Lagoon/Kelk Creek?)
Day 21 Broome

With thanks,
Kathy

21 days Broome to Broome

Hi Kathy,
That looks good.
Regarding the Mitchell Plateau, did you read your hire contract in detail? Because some people feel that the things that could go seriously wrong on a trip up there are not covered anyway.

I am not saying I recommend it, just that I do know people go anyway.

Whether you take the flight or go up the Dampier Peninsula is one of those tough calls you have to make. I can't help you there. I don't like scenic flights, I'd much rather sit at Bully's Camp or at the Whalesong Cafe instead, but that must not influence your desicion. I am not you.

Day 10 should not be a problem. I can't predict how long exactly it should take since I can't predict the state of the road. But it won't be a problem. You'll even have time for morning tea at Ellenbrae :-).

Of course, if you do want to do the whole walk to Manning Gorge in the same day and have some time there, then I recommend you get going very early. But you can always visit the gorge itself the next morning, and you still have the whole afternoon and a full day at Charnley River.
